Raymond Poulidor near the finish of the 20th stage of the 1976 Tour de France, the summit of the Puy-de-Dome. He finished 4th in this stage, holding off Raymond Delisle to maintain 3rd place in the overall standings, at 40, the oldest man to achieve this in the Tour's history. He is riding his usual Mercier bicycle. This picture gives us a nice feel for the incredible excitement that is characteristic of this particular stage, with the spectators crowding the sides of the road, leaving only a narrow path for the riders.
